Marquette owns many published and unpublished manuscripts of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work relating to his life and fantasy writings, including working papers for his three well-known novels:
- The Hobbit (1937)
- Farmer Giles of Ham (1949)
- The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), including original holographs, typescripts and galley sheets with numerous holograph corrections.
Several maps from this collection were featured in the exhibition, “Maps: Finding our Place in the World,” at Chicago’s Field Museum, in late 2007.
