The difficulty of caring for four intellectually challenged men leads a burned-out social worker to examine his own life in Marquette Theatre’s performance of The Boys Next Door. The show will run from Thursday, Nov. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 17, at the Evan P. and Marion Helfaer Theatre, 525 North 13th Street.
Tom Griffin’s off-Broadway hit made into a TV movie, The Boys Next Door takes a truthful look into the lives of four men with mental challenges living together in a group home. Their daily routines and interactions are both funny and tenderly sweet, but leave their hard-working social worker contemplating a career change. The performance will run:
- Thursday, Nov. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2:30 p.m.
The show, supported in part by the Phylis Ravel Theatre and Social Justice Fund, is utilizing OpentheDoorMU.tumblr.com and talkback sessions after selected performances to facilitate conversations about the effects of mental illness.
