February 19, 2016

MILWAUKEE — Justin George, a crime reporter at The Baltimore Sun and a 2015-16 O’Brien Fellow will present “Saving a City, Saving a Nation,” Thursday, Feb. 25, from noon to 1 p.m. in Raynor Memorial Libraries Beaumier Suites B/C.

In his discussion, George will discuss notable incidents in Milwaukee, Cleveland, Missouri, New York and South Carolina, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement. Herbert Lowe, journalism professional in residence in the Diederich College of Communication, will serve as moderator.

George reported from inside the police department’s headquarters during the Freddie Gray investigation and subsequent riots in Baltimore last April. Previously a contributor to the first series of the popular podcast Serial, he was featured on the recent CNN special report “Who Killed Freddie Gray?”

George is one of four journalists spending the 2015-16 academic year as part of the Perry and Alicia O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism. This fully funded fellowship allows newsroom professionals to do the best work of their careers on issues of vital importance while they also mentor the next generation of journalists. As an O’Brien Fellow with the Diederich College of Communication, George is spending nine months researching, reporting and writing stories relating to the issue of police brutality in the city of Milwaukee.

The discussion is open to the public, but registration is required. The event is sponsored by Raynor Memorial Libraries, the Office of Institutional Diversity, and the Perry and Alicia O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism. Media wishing to attend should contact Clare Peterson, communication specialist, in the Office of Marketing and Communication.
