MILWAUKEE – Marquette Theatre will present Alice Childress’ Wine in the Wilderness at the Evan P. & Marion Helfaer Theatre. The play will be directed by guest artist Marti Gobel and feature current Marquette students, alumni and a Milwaukee guest actor.
Set during the Harlem race riots of 1964, Wine in the Wilderness deals with treatment of African-American women within their community and the struggle to define true beauty and perfection. With the riot as a backdrop, artist Bill Jameson is painting a triptych to embody “black womanhood.” When he encounters Tommy, Bill assumes that he’s found the perfect example of an ignorant African-American woman, but soon finds her challenging his ideas, beliefs and entire worldview.
Performances will be presented:
- Thursday, April 28, and Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m.
- Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Gobel, a Milwaukee actress and director, will return to Marquette after directing last season’s In The Red and Brown Water. The cast will consist of Marquette students Chloe Hurckes, Nadja Simmonds, and Kevin Price; Marquette alumnus Terrence Morris, Jr.; and Milwaukee actor James Carrington.
