MILWAUKEE — Marquette University has launched a new partnership with Zipcar Inc., a car-sharing service.
Zipcar is an alternative transportation option that provides cars that can be reserved by the day or hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Two Zipcars will be available at Marquette, located in parking Lot G behind Zilber Hall, 1250 W. Wisconsin Ave.
The program is available to all Marquette students, faculty and staff members, ages 18 and older. Milwaukee community members at least 21 years old also have access to the program. Gas, 180 miles per day, insurance, reserved parking spots and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for up to four days. Rates on all Marquette vehicles start as low as $8 per hour and $66 per day (24 hours).
The annual membership fee for anyone affiliated with Marquette is $35 and Marquette applicants receive $35 worth of free driving credit that applies towards their first month of driving. Marquette students, faculty and staff can join at www.zipcar.com/marquette.
“Bringing Zipcar to campus is part of our goal to support alternative forms of transportation,” said Mike Whittow, Marquette University’s sustainability officer. “As a complement to our existing transit options, including Milwaukee County bus passes, Zipcar provides students, faculty and staff additional flexibility and helps Marquette reduce our carbon footprint as a community.”
Zipcar members reserve the cars through an online reservation system and there is also an iPhone app that will honk the horn to locate a Zipcar and unlock the doors for members. Reservations can be made online at anytime at members’ convenience.
“Zipcar helps address the parking and transit limitations that are common in city-based universities,” said Matthew Malloy, vice president of Global University Operations at Zipcar. “In addition, Marquette can be proud that it is helping to reduce the impact on the environment since studies show each car shared replaces 15 cars on the road.”
Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 225 universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University. Zipcar utilizes a network of local vendors to service and clean its fleet.
